Justice for Connie Petition
Connie Chen, a senior at the prestigious Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut, was involved in a serious single-car accident on November 6, 2008. The professional accident reconstruction report indicated that her car had been tampered with before the crash. Prior to the accident, Connie experienced bullying and harassment from two adults at Hopkins: the head swim coach and a rival swimmer's mother who manages the coach's private swim club on Hopkins campus. The harassment was directly triggered by Connie's college swim recruitment process. The coach angrily confronted Connie regarding her recruitment application and the mother used body language to express her anger. This verbal and emotional bullying made Connie uncomfortable during school and averse to attending swim practice after class. Meanwhile, the Hopkins School College Counseling office inexplicably delayed sending her academic transcript to the college swim coach who had expressed interest in recruiting Connie. These incidents led Connie's parents to file a formal complaint against the two adults. Two hours after their meeting with a school official, Connie's car crashed less than half a mile from the school entrance.
